Two weekends ago we went to the theater and saw Fifty Shades Darker (I will not be writing a “Would we watch it again?” on FSD because that movie was sh*t). Outside the theater I saw the poster for A Cure for Wellness and vaguely remembered seeing the trailer and wanting to watch it. A couple of days later I was talking to my sister and she said that she wanted to watch A Cure for Wellness.
Friday morning she texted me asking if I would take her to see it. I didn’t look anything up about the movie, I didn’t watch any other trailers, but I agreed. On Saturday morning we took her to see this ‘psych thriller’ type movie.
I don’t want to give any part of this movie away because I genuinely loved it so much. I also believe that the more people know going into this movie the less effective the storytelling is so, here are my takeaways :
- The more I think about this movie the more I love it. Usually, the more I think about a movie the less I find it truly enjoyable. Walking out of the theater I said, “I mean, it was good but I wouldn’t watch it again…” Today I told a coworker, “I cannot wait for the commentary to be released so I can watch it over and over!”
- It was disturbing but not so disturbing I can’t rationalize the horror and sleep at night. This point is really important to me. I hate movies that make me afraid of falling asleep at night.
- If you liked Shutter Island, you’ll probably like this movie. If you saw Eyes Wide Shut, you’ll probably like this movie. However, the ratings are all over the place and A Cure for Wellness is definitely not for everybody.
- Even if you aren’t into the story line the cinematography was stunning. The cinematographer was Bojan Bazelli, who also worked on Burlesque (one of my favorite movies) and directed by Gore Verbinksi, director of Pirates of the Caribbean.
I think that I’m going to write my thoughts more in depth on this film once it’s released for streaming/DVD because I know that not everyone goes out to the movies and I don’t want to talk spoilers… Yet!
8.5/10 would watch this movie again! (Can I really give it a 10 if I watched most of it through my fingers? And Eduardo rated it lower than a 10.)
